This week, we welcome out first video game creator guest, Jay Pinkerton, co-writer of Valve’s Portal 2, which is already, in my humble opinion, a contender for game of the year. Jay’s an old pal of ours, so he sits in with us for the whole show! He talks with us about his (and our) time in the early days of internet comedy, writing comics for Valve, following up the surprise success of the first Portal, working with Stephen Merchant and J.K. Simmons, music to write to, and a ton more! Plus, we examine the fallout of that Action Comics #900 backup. You know the one. And Dracula MAY show up. You’ve been warned.
The Rundown
- Here’s that Portal 2 comic Jay mentioned, and the Left 4 Dead comic he wrote, with art by Michael Avon Oeming! And one of many Team Fortress 2 comics.
- In all seriousness, unless you’re like Chris, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be playing Portal 2.
- Here’s that piece about assembling an Ikea desk on Jay’s old site.
- Because of a computer theft a few years ago, I lost almost all my old JayPinkerton.com forum comics forever. But I did manage to find a couple. Sadly, the best thing I have ever made, a comic featuring a woman with a tennis ball for a face, will never be seen again.
- Jay’s Rec: The Comics Cube in Bonney Lake, Washington
- Chris’ Rec: The Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2
- Matt’s Rec: New socks
Comics Talked About:
- Amazing Spider-Man #659
- Batman Incorporated #5
- Detective Comics #876
- FF#2
- Action Comics #900
Shameless Self Promotion:
- The @FakeAPStylebook book, Write More Good, is still available to buy right here!
- Check out Sims at The ISB, Comics Alliance, his webcomic Awesome Hospital, as well as the complete Solomon Stone at ActionAgeComics.
- Check out Matt’s Fake e-Etiquette Twitter feed, The Content Farm and his blog. You can also buy his book, Hate You Forever, on Lulu and Amazon.

I’m compelled to comment here before even listening to the episode – I’m that psyched about an episode with Jay. I used to lurk on jp.com back in the day, and still read some of the stuff there every once in a while. While the Seanbaby and OMM archives don’t quite live up to my memory (even though they’re still fucking awesome), Jay’s stuff is evergreen.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go deal with this cloud of shrieking bats attacking my eyes and face.
Props for the mention of Osama Bin Laden – Prophetic perhaps Sims? You must use these new powers to fight crime.
In reply to the “Name a game that can’t be made better by adding Dracula” challenge: Castlevania 2. Also, Tetris.
Dammit Brian! You took my answer. Q-Bert? Mike Tyson’s Knockout would definitely be better with Dracula. Galaga wouldn’t really be improved. I’m going with that.
Brian: I’m pretty sure Sims mentioned that Double Draculas trump single Draculas, so it’d still be better.
c’mon guys, Owen Hart! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_gvPXeIV1c
Also is Sims aware of the Valve-Draculas tradition? The Team Fortress 2 blog often mentions Draculas (plural) BEHIND YOU on Halloween in their announcements. Valve loves Draculas but good.
