I feel like this is relevant to the Wolverine catch phrase thing:

I’d say Sam Adams is a good analogue for Alexander Keith. Their beers are both labels that are a cut above the usual domestic swill, but maybe not as respected as a good craft brew or import. The standard Sam Adams is a lager, while Keith’s is famous for its India Pale Ale, but they both have a pretty diverse set of offerings. When I’m south of the border, Sam Adams is my go-to beer.
Cheers, guys!
I don’t have it on hand to double check, but I’m fairly certain that “best there is at what I do” line comes from the Claremont/Miller Wolverine series.
Wikiquote claims that “I’m the best at what I do…” first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #162, but I thought it was in Wolverine #1 a month earlier (Sept. 1983). Either way, it’s Claremont. The line works *much* better as Logan’s first-person narration, which is more prose-ish, than as spoken dialogue.
The original version of the Spider-Man quote–the tale’s moral in Amazing Fantasy #15–is “With great power there must also come — great responsibility!”
Finally, I’m sure you’ve noticed this, but if you do 3 quotes per episode but only do the segment every other week, you’re not going to get near to 100–that’s only 78 quotes.
“The critics who say Claremont ought to have curbed his verbosity for the sake of narrative expediency are missing the point, and failing to get on board with Claremont’s enjoyment and relish of the English language. The people who are sick of the Wolverine catchphrase ‘I’m the best there is at what I do’ have probably never noticed that it’s written in iambic pentameter.”
I learned this from Jason Powell’s amazing literary reviews of Chris Claremont’s entire X-Men run (located at http://geoffklock.blogspot.com/search/label/Jason%20Powell?updated-max=2007-12-29T10:42:00-05:00&max-results=20&start=239&by-date=false)
P.S. I grabbed this as soon as you guys started discussing the quote, and then, as I wrote it, got to hear Matt declare “Part of me just thinks it’s too wordy… I think it needs editing… to ‘I’m the best at what I do, and it isn’t very nice…” Cracked me up.
