The scene where Superman gives people gins and watches as they kill their dictator is from Superman Earth One vol. 2. Vol. 1 is still awful, though.
I enjoyed your discussion of Daredevil: Guardian Devil a great deal–I haven’t re-read it since it came out and had forgotten how the ending completely collapses.
I wanted to share an anecdote I heard from a couple of sources about a key incident that brought Quesada to the head of Marvel. Bill Jemas had decided to launch the Ultimate line, and he solicited opinions from Marvel’s senior editors about who should run the first two titles. Bob Harras suggested Howard Mackie and Scott Lobdell for Spider-Man and X-Men (respectively). Quesada suggested Bendis and Millar.
I don’t trust this anecdote completely–it’s so perfectly tailored to my prejudices about both Harras and Quesada–but as I said, I heard it from two different sources, one of which was really solid with Marvel gossip at the time.
Can you really say Guardian Devil ruined Karen when Frank Miller made her a coke addict who sold Matt secret identity for a hit?
