Episode 156 – That Means I Win f/Justin Aclin

We don’t often talk about S*** W*** on War Rocket Ajax, but we’re breaking one of our own rules this week to talk about it with Justin Aclin, the writer of two Dark Horse graphic novels in the series. We’ll talk about our histories with the series, how side-stories can be really good, bright colors, Justin’s work on the video game tie-in Akaneiro, and much more! Plus, a quick Love Haters segment!

  1. I didn’t know comics alliance has been shut down, its bullshit, will Ajax be ok?

  2. Sorry to hear about Comics Alliance, but I hope you guys find a way to keep podcasting.

Also I can completely sympathize with Chris on Star Wars. Prior to the prequels I was a total fan of Star Wars. I devoured all the expanded universe books, collected the toys, played the CCG, and subscribed to the Star Wars Insider. In retrospect, I was so deep in my fandom, that my mind glossed over the bad parts so I even thought the Kevin J. Anderson books were good.

That fandom mental shielding held up through Episode I, which I thought was great the first time I watched it. That started to crack though on repeated viewings of the movie, mostly on bus trips for high school band competitions, and I started to realize that maybe it wasn’t actually a good move.

However, it was Episode II which really killed Star Wars for me. Specifically it was the scene where Yoda fights Dooku. Not only did I feel that looked completely ridiculous, but (and this is probably going to be the most fanboy-ish part of the comments) it completely undermined Yoda’s character in my mind.

The whole point of Yoda is subverting expectations. Luke comes looking for a great warrior, and finds this little muppet. I think Sims may have mentioned something similar is a past episode, but the line “wars do not make one great” tells you everything to know about Yoda’s character. So to see him flipping out and fighting Christopher Lee, or even giving orders to soldiers was jarring to my mind.

That started me on a downward trend with Star Wars. I didn’t watch trailers for Episode III, because I remembered the trailers for the past two movies being awesome (remember that Phantom Menace one with the Darth Vadar breathing) and wasn’t going to get fooled again. I went into the theater with as low of expectations as I could possibly manage, and I still was disappointed at it, but I told myself that even if the prequels sucked the good of Star Wars outweighed the bad and I could still be a fan of it.

Except that I afterward I found it increasingly hard to care about Star Wars. I couldn’t bring myself to read the newest books and when Galaxies, a game that literally allowed you to become a part of the Star Wars Universe, came out I just shrugged. I still liked Star Wars, but I didn’t care about it, if that makes any sense.

That said, the new stuff from Dark Horse, especially the new Brian Wood series, seems pretty good. I may pick some of them up, but I don’t see myself falling down the rabbit hole anytime soon.

  3. I have several male LGBT friends who have said that their first viewing of Flash Gordon is when they knew they were gay. Not just one friend…SEVERAL.
Also, we all know Star Wars was an allegorical account of the holocaust.

So, what I’m saying is, I think Chris might be a gay anti-Semite.

    jkjkjkjkjk, great episode guys.

    #trollin’

  4. Randy Newman is a legit songwriter who mostly writes bitter stuff.. ignore his Disney stuff.

  5. I know it’s a bit late to mention this, but “Baltimore” by Randy Newman is a damn fine song.
