We welcome Colleen Coover back to the show this week to talk about the comics she drew for Marvel and Taco Bell, video games, storytelling, horror and more! Plus: Our pledge drive rolls on, and Chris talks about why the money’s coming in so handy.
The Rundown
Follow Colleen Coover on Twitter! We didn’t get to talk about it much on the show, but you should also read her not-at-all-a-webcomic comic Gingerbread Girl at Top Shelf 2.0!
If you have read the Taco Bell comics we talked about on the show but have not actually read, let us know what you think!
This week Chris and Matt welcome Dr. McNinja artist/writer and recently named Deadpool: Fear Itself writer Christopher Hastings to the show! We talk with him at length about Dr. McNinja, Deadpool, influences, cursing in webcomics, the classic action film Commando and much more! If that wasn’t enough, we’re also joined by Ajax Hundo Club member Evan Guidry, and Chris takes on a hater on the topic of versatility!
In case you had any doubts about the greatness that is Commando.
We ask again that anyone who’s considering donating to WRA this week instead send that money to the Red Cross to help the people devastated by the earthquake in Japan. Alternately, GlobalGiving also has a Japan relief fund.
To those who don’t like it when we talk about chicken and/or barbecue: Tough for you this week.
Oh, hey! I didn’t talk about it on the show, but I’ll be hanging out at C2E2 in Chicago this weekend. I’ll be the guy with the beard, the longish hair and the horn-rimmed glasses. Say hi!
We managed to get an in somehow and get Jim Zubkavich, creator of Skullkickers and editor/writer of a whole bunch of Street Fighter comics, to talk to us this week! We get Jim to explain what possessed him to allow Chris Sims to write a story in the latest issue of Skullkickers (#6, in stores now), to talk at length about Street Fighter and to answer the burning question of whether there’ll ever be a boy born who can swim as fast as a shark. Plus, our pledge drive rolls on as we welcome the first member of the Ajax Hundo Club, Ryan Holliday, to our third chair!
Our bro blogger and Agreeable Comics writer Kevin Church stops by this week to talk about the abrupt ending to The Rack, his other comics, working with artists, Internet commenting vs. blogging, good ’90s comics and much more! Plus, our pledge drive keeps rolling on and Chris and Matt discuss their recent travels. If that wasn’t enough, we also take on someone who’s been hating on the both of us!
Thanks again to everyone who’s donated to the WRA Pledge Drive! It’s still going strong! To get this week’s special incentive, feel free to use the Donate button on the right.
Love is in the air in this week’s special Valentine’s Day episode, as lucky bachelorette Jen Vaughn picks between Chris, Matt and third chair David Wolkin in our very own version of the Dating Game! Romance and awkwardness abound. We also graciously thank the surprisingly large group of donors from the first days of our War Rocket Ajax pledge drive, and beg for more money. Also: Find out the disaster that was Matt’s Jeopardy! online test!
The Rundown
Follow David and Jen on Twitter. As you can tell from the episode, they’re both hilarious people.
Hope you like the song “Spanish Flea,” because you’re about to hear it like nine times in a row.
Here’s the hugely successful Kickstarter page for Jen’s “Lies Grownups Told Me” anthology with Nomi Kane and Caitlin M.
In case you didn’t think those He Said/She Said comics could be real, here they are.
We can’t say it enough: Thank you to everyone who’s donated so that we can keep talking about stuff on this podcast. We are surprised and humbled by the generosity you guys have shown.
The ban has been lifted! That’s right, Curt Franklin and Chris Haley of Let’s Be Friends Again join us again for a show full of inappropriateness about Crocodile Dundee, Ernest, characters from ’80s commercials, cinnamon, a challenge involving lasagna and a chest, Joel Schumacher and “the bush.” Plus, we talk about today’s big LBFA/Adam Warrock announcement! If that wasn’t enough, Chris and I kick off our big pledge drive!
The Rundown
Attention MaxtotheMax: Don’t listen to this episode. For your own good.
Play the Episode 55 drinking game! Take a shot every time you hear an awkward pause (and I edited some out).
The donate button is right over there in the sidebar, if you’re interested.
I apologize for the weird cut right at the beginning of the interview. Not sure how that happened, because when I listened to the rough cut of the interview it wasn’t like that. Anyway, the question that is missing is about how Chris, Curt and Chris all met.
REVEALED: The true reason Chris Sims traveled to New York last week! DISCUSSED: Crappy winter weather, delicious food, good times! ANSWERED: A whole bunch of listener questions, including quite possibly the most baffling one we’ve ever received! And more in this all-tired episode!
The Rundown
We had to throw this one together pretty quickly after Chris got back from NYC on a delayed flight. Hope it’s up to our usual standard, such as it is.
Read up on Carolinas-style barbecue, people from elsewhere, so we don’t have to keep talking about it.
We did a (relatively) short one for once. Hooray!
Much in the spirit of this episode, the iTunes version is going to go up a little late. Sorry, iTuners.
This week’s episode is a big one as we talk for a good long while with actor James Urbaniak, Dr. Venture himself, about The Venture Bros., his hilarious web videos, his enjoyment of alternative comics (including those by a fellow he played in American Splendor, R. Crumb) and our mutual love of Gene Wilder, among other things. We also debut a new theme song by a guy you may have heard of, Adam Warrock, and explain the reasons we needed a new theme pretty much immediately. Add in some Jeopardy! talk and some mysterious news from Chris and it’s a jam-packed show!
The Rundown
Do yourself a favor and follow James Urbaniak on Twitter and Tumblr. We didn’t get a chance to get into it on the show, but he’s had some hilarious political tweets in the past few weeks.
One last thing! James does some neat old-time-style radio with the folks at The Thrilling Adventure Hour! Download the podcast or go see ’em!
I was mistaken about the availability of the second half of Venture Bros. season 4 on DVD. It won’t be out until March. But you can get the first half!
Okay, so here’s what happened with this week’s Pick a Question, Any Question. Skype was being its Skypey self during our interview with Urbaniak, which is to say it was cutting out every once in a while. It happened to cut out right as James was answering the question, so it sounds like he just says “…Well,” which is actually a pretty funny answer itself, but it wasn’t what he really said. His actual answer was, “You know damn well,” which is also funny. Just so we’re clear.
The J Ferocious Euge mentions in the new theme song is the guy who sent us the e-mail alerting us to the problem with the old one. If you were wondering about the beat for the new theme, it’s “Hindsight” by the Visionaries. You’ll be able to download it soon at Euge’s site.
Jimmy Olsen, Morning Glories, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and Infinite Vacation writer Nick Spencer sits down with us this week to talk about the tough lessons of the Silver Age, giving voice to the people behind the biggest names in Metropolis and, of course, that whole Heavy Ink thing. We also debut our brand new sort-of-kind-of standard Twitter question (a top hat is involved) and discuss what’s pissing Chris off this week.
The Rundown
Follow Nick Spencer on Twitter and check out the recent USA Todayarticles which spotlighted him! While you’re at it, go ahead and pre-order the first Morning Glories trade!
Seriously, if you go to one comic convention this year, it ought to be Heroes Con.
We’re recovering from our New Year’s hangovers this week and trying to relearn the basics of podcasting after a long break. Luckily, the always entertaining Chris Roberson, who is taking over for J. Michael Straczynski on Superman and is writing Starborn with Stan Lee, stopped by for the third time, despite officially now being a capital-b Big Deal! We also read out your favorite moments from the show’s first 49 episodes and answer some listener questions!
